The character of the story Mr. Leonatrd Mead is a lonely man without a family he lives by himself. His main routine is to walk every night and he is the only pedestrian doing this for a long time in 2053. One night, as always, he takes a walk on the road when a police car stops him and is arrested and taken to a mental institution because of his traditional walk instead of watching tv-shows.
Trough the plot the author shows that he prefers to spend his time walking and experiencing things first hand than to just watch them in tv-shows or social media. This means that the plot shows the theme of real versus artificial. We can notice that the author talks about two different places in the story for example when the author talks about the crystal frost in the air; it cut the nose and made the lungs blaze like a Christmas tree inside; you can feel the cold light going on and off and all the branches filled with invisible snow, the character is exploring new things and when he imagines himself upon the center of a plain, a wintry, windless Arizona desert with no house in a thousand miles, and only dry rivers beds, streets, for company.
